FREDERICK II ROMAN EMPEROR

His history and his times

Was Frederick II "...the beast that surges up from the sea laden with blasphemous names, and raging with a bear’s paws and a lion’s maw, his other members in the likeness of a leopard, his gaping mouth offending the Holy Name, unceasingly even hurling his lance at the tabernacle of God and His Saints in heaven..." as Gregory IX would have him, or "the God-sent savior, the prince of peace, the messiah-emperor" as described by Pier delle Vigne, his great magistrate, Logothetes, and initiate to the Oriental mysteries?

Although these words ripened in the political forum of the 13th century, it’s also true that even now, though the arguments have changed, accredited historians still debate about a figure about whom until this day no one has been able to form a wholly convincing historical and human representation.

In these pages we wish to present some important events in the life and work of this figure without pretending to add fresh interpretations which will only be possible with the discovery of new and important sources of information. Rather, we wish to spread a correct view of a man who, loved and hated as he has been, is without doubt worthy of our maximum consideration.
